Website Design and Hosting in One Location

Why do I offer website design and hosting in a number of my packages?

Because many people do not understand what it takes to build a virtual storefront, the idea of doing this for most people seems very daunting and confusing.

When I say a virtual storefront, I do not only mean a website to sell products (which we also design on a WooCommerce theme) and a storefront website that will provide information on who you are and what you do as a business, as well as contact information.

Unless you have been through this task before, it can be involved in its very nature. Many working pieces need to be interconnected to function correctly.

1.) Should I use an all-in-one website builder like WIX or Squarespace?

2.) Buy a domain name and where?

3.) What hosting provider do you build your website on and why?

4.) What type of platform should you install on your hosting?

5.) What type of theme do you install on this platform and why?

6.) What about SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

7.) What other tools can be added to your website?

8.) What about Website maintenance?

I will attempt to answer these questions here in this blog.

Website Design and Hosting in One Location

1.) Should I use a free all-in-one website builder?

These website builders like WIX or Squarespace may sound good, but when you dig deeper, you will find you will lose control of your website, or they recommend you hire different professionals to help with design or SEO as well as other features that are having your website designed by a professional and having it hosted on an independent hosting provider.

What Do We Mean by Free Website?

Most beginners who want to start their website want to keep the cost low, which is understandable.

The thought of having free web hosting and building your site without paying anything is tempting.

Until you get a reality check, once you sign up for these so-called “free website services,” you slowly start discovering the limitations, and many of them turn out to be not free at all.

As a business owner, you want complete control of your business, which means your website. You want to host it on a hosting account you own as well as control your domain name.

You want to move your website and domain name to a new hosting account any time you want to. The free website builders will not let you do that. You are stuck on their platform. They will not let you transfer your website anywhere else.

I have written a blog with much more information that you may want to read: Why Having a Free Website is a Bad Idea.

2.) Buy a Domain Name

I recommend that you buy your domain name yourself at a reliable source like Godaddy or Bluehost, so this way, that domain name belongs to you.

I then ask you to send me the username and password to that account, so I will be able to connect your website to it and SEO confirmation.

Domain names cost around $12-$14 for the year for a .COM and more for personalized one like .PHOTOGRAPHER or .GURU like mine is.

If you need help getting that setup, I can help do that at no additional charge.

3.) What hosting provider do you build your website on and why?

I use a top tear hosting provider for all my websites as well as my customer websites. GoDaddy and Bluehost, and other cheap hosting providers may be OK for buying your domain name but not OK for hosting.

They are just too slow. Those companies do not provide the resources that a robust and powerful business website needs to display quickly and efficiently.

Frustration will set in for both the website designer and a new potential customer if the website does not open fast.

I will host your website as part of one of my packages for a limited time period. One or two years, you depend on which one you pick.

I recommend that you have it transferred after that time, so you have complete control over your site. I will recommend you use the same hosting that I use, and I will oversee the transfer.

I do this, so you have one less thing to worry about when you are trying to launch your business, and it will help lower the cost considerably when you start this new business.

4.) What type of platform should you install on your hosting?

I only design websites on WordPress.

WordPress is being used on over 35% of all professional websites today, and there is a reason for that.

Originally WordPress was made for bloggers but soon became a platform to be used for building complete websites.

Today there are millions of web designers using WordPress to build websites.

Wikipedia says it best. WordPress (WP, is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) written in PHP and paired with a MySQL or MariaDB database. Features include a plugin architecture and a template system.

I will install a WordPress platform on your hosting as part of what I do and then have your domain name point over to it with the correct IP address.

Look at the paragraph just directly below to understand better the difference between WordPress and a theme.

5.) What type of theme do you install on this platform and why?

A theme needs to be placed on the WordPress website to make it work.

I like to explain it this way. A new website is like building a new house.

WordPress supplies the foundation, walls, plumbing and electrical, and a fence around the house.

A theme gives you the tools to paint the walls, bring in furniture, lights, carpet, and landscape the yard.

We use a premium theme called Divi, which we purchased from Elegant themes so it can be used on your website.

This theme is potent and allows us to drop and drag images, PDFs, and text without writing code.

It frees me up to do creative things like designing in Photoshop, Illustrator, creating videos and making logos for your business and printed material like flyers and business cards.

When your website is finished, I will also teach you how to make small changes on your website with one-to-one conversations and teaching videos uploaded to YouTube.

6.) What about SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

SEO is a language used by Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines to find your website on the internet.

What good is a beautiful website if no one can ever find it?

I bring in many advanced tools to help with your SEO, such as installing plugins that help with keyword selection, meta descriptions, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Schema (featured snippets).

All these tools help your website rank higher and outperform your competitors.

It’s like having a prime location on a street where you will be noticed first.

7.) What other tools can be added to your website?

I install plugins to your website that will give the site more functionality without having to do code.

Some of these are plugins that help with security, SEO, fonts, analytic dashboard, marketing, SSL certificate verification, email connections, language translator, and many others.

As I said, I do not like to do code unless I have to, and plugins let me do just that efficiently.

8.) What about Website maintenance?

I take care of all website maintenance for as long as I host your website.

After that, when you have your website transferred, I will charge a nominal fee every month to keep up the maintenance in the form of theme and plugin updates, security checks, content updates, and WordPress support.

You will find my maintenance packages here.
